# Kentucky Youth Deer Hunting: Ages, Licenses and Adult Supervision

By Michael Small

November 2, 2026

**Start with your child’s age on the hunt date.** I’d check that first, then confirm licenses, deer permits, hunter education, and adult supervision before choosing a stand or booking travel.

- **Age 15 or younger:** Check eligibility for youth-only hunts.
- **Under 12:** Check the license and hunter-education exemptions - and the supervision rules that still apply.
- **Ages 12–15:** Check license and deer-permit requirements based on residency.

_An exemption is not a pass on other hunting rules._ I’d confirm current dates, allowed weapons, bag limits, hunter orange, and [Telecheck](https://fw.ky.gov/Hunt/pages/telecheck-info.aspx) requirements with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. Then review access, stand setup, guardian arrangements, and booking details with Whitetail Hunting Kentucky. Settle those details before you travel.

Kentucky Youth Deer Hunting: Age, Licenses and Supervision

## Youth Hunting Licenses and Deer Permits

**A hunting license and a deer permit serve different purposes.** The license covers general hunting; the permit allows deer hunting. Unless exempt, a youth hunter needs both - or a package that includes both. For hunters ages 12–15, residency determines which options apply.

### Resident and Nonresident Licenses for Ages 12–15

Before buying, confirm current prices, eligibility, and included privileges through KDFWR’s [current license and permit fee table](https://fw.ky.gov/Licenses/Pages/Fees.aspx). These prices were checked on November 1, 2026; confirm them again before purchasing.

| Residency | License and permit option | Total | Included privileges |
| ----------- | ----------------------------------------- | ------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Resident | Youth Sportsman’s License | $31.71 | Hunting license, statewide deer permit, and turkey permits |
| Resident | Youth Hunting License + Youth Deer Permit | $16.91 | General hunting privileges and deer permit; turkey permits not included |
| Nonresident | Youth Hunting License + Youth Deer Permit | $26.43 | General hunting privileges and deer permit; turkey permits not included |

Each listed option covers up to **4 deer, with no more than 1 antlered deer**, subject to applicable season and zone limits.

Check whether an exemption applies before purchasing either credential.

### License Exemptions: Under 12, Resident Land, and Free Youth Weekend

Children under 12 do not need a hunting license or deer permit.

The resident landowner exemption applies only to qualifying resident landowners and their dependent children hunting on qualifying resident land. Owning land does not give a nonresident this resident exemption.

Eligible resident and nonresident youth may hunt without a license or deer permit during Free Youth Weekend. Before planning around an exemption, confirm the current conditions through KDFWR’s deer-hunting rules. Check hunter-education requirements separately, including any exemption that applies.

## Youth Hunter-Education Requirements

Once you’ve confirmed the young hunter’s age and license status, check KDFWR’s [hunter-education guidance](https://fw.ky.gov/Education/Pages/Hunter-Education.aspx) to see which certification or exemption applies.

### Certification and the Under-12 Exemption

Youth hunters who are not exempt must have hunter-education certification and carry proof while hunting.

For a child under 12 hunting without certification, **close adult supervision is required**: an adult age 18 or older who is certified or exempt must be able to take immediate control of the equipment. An adult may accompany no more than two such children at once. See [Kentucky’s hunter-education regulation](https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/kar/titles/301/002/185/).

### The 1-Year Hunter-Education Exemption Permit

Kentucky’s one-time, 1-year hunter-education exemption permit temporarily waives certification. The hunter must carry the permit and stay with an adult age 18 or older who can immediately control the equipment and carries certification proof or was born before January 1, 1975.

KDFWR’s [permit guidance](https://fw.ky.gov/Education/Pages/Hunter-Education.aspx) also specifies a licensed supervising adult. This is a separate requirement from merely accompanying a certified youth hunter.

## Adult Supervision Rules for Youth Deer Hunters

### Adult Age, Qualifications, and Weapon Control

A deer hunter age 15 or younger using a gun, including a muzzleloader, must be accompanied by an adult age 18 or older who can **take immediate control of the youth’s gun**. This firearm-specific rule is set out in [Kentucky’s deer-hunting regulation](https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/kar/titles/301/002/172/).

A license or hunter-education exemption does not remove the youth gun-supervision rule. The under-12 and temporary-permit supervision rules described above also apply when relevant. Plan a setup that allows immediate control of the equipment.

### Adult Hunting Restrictions and Hunter Orange

If you also hunt, meet your own licensing requirements and follow the season’s weapon rules. Adults cannot take deer with firearms during a youth-only hunt unless a concurrent statewide muzzleloader season allows it. During deer firearms seasons, both the hunter and accompanying adult must wear solid hunter orange visible on the head, back and chest. See [KDFWR’s deer-hunting rules](https://fw.ky.gov/Hunt/Pages/Deer.aspx).

## Pre-Trip Checks for a Youth Deer Hunt

Before you travel, check that your youth hunter’s age, credentials, and supervision arrangements meet current Kentucky rules for the planned hunt.

### Family Pre-Hunt Checklist

Confirm the youth’s age on the hunt date and choose a season they’re eligible to hunt. Check the dates, allowed weapon, required credentials, and supervision rules on the [Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources website](https://fw.ky.gov/). Then confirm your trip details with Whitetail Hunting Kentucky.

### Check Official Rules and Confirm Your Guided Hunt

Once you’ve checked the rules, work through the hunt-day details with Whitetail Hunting Kentucky: youth hunt dates, supervision and guardian arrangements, stand location and access, and transportation. Check the [current package details](https://whitetailhuntingkentucky.com/pricing/) and confirm whether lodging and meals are included in your booking.

## FAQs

### Can my child hunt if they turn 16 during deer season?

Yes, but youth-only deer hunts are limited to hunters **15 or younger on the hunt date**, with the required adult supervision. Turning 16 ends youth-only eligibility.

A youth license purchased before their 16th birthday remains valid through that license year. They may continue hunting in regular open seasons with the required valid credentials. See [KDFWR’s youth-season FAQ](https://fw.ky.gov/Hunt/Pages/Youth-Only-Firearms-Deer-Hunting-Weekend.aspx).

### Does my child’s supervising adult need a hunting license?

**No, if the adult is only accompanying the youth and is not hunting.** Kentucky’s [deer-hunting regulation](https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/kar/titles/301/002/172/) exempts that accompanying adult from a hunting license and deer permit. If the adult also hunts, their own licensing and hunter-education requirements apply.

A separate condition applies when supervising someone using a temporary hunter-education exemption permit: [KDFWR specifies a licensed adult who meets hunter-education requirements](https://fw.ky.gov/Education/Pages/Hunter-Education.aspx).

### Must I report deer harvested by a license-exempt child?

Yes. **A license-exempt child’s harvested deer must still be reported through Telecheck.** Kentucky requires every harvested deer to be reported by midnight on the day of recovery. That applies even when the child is license-exempt. Complete the harvest log before moving the deer, and record the Telecheck confirmation number. See [KDFWR’s checking and tagging rules](https://fw.ky.gov/Hunt/Pages/Deer.aspx).
